Dr Menasce completed her medical degree at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1980 and her PhD at Manchester University in I994, developing new techniques for diagnosis of lymphoma. She pioneered fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) techniques for the diagnosis of haemolymphoid malignancies and contributed to the mapping of the human genome.
Dr Menasce trained in histopathology in Manchester, followed by subspecialisation in haemolymphoid and endocrine pathology at The Christie and at the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology at the University of Porto (IPATIMUP) in Portugal.
