Key resources

Request a literature search

We can run a literature search for you on a specific topic required for research, service development or patient care. One of our librarians will develop a search strategy, run the search, and provide the results to you in your required format.

To request a literature search, you can either complete our literature search request form on HIVE or email the Library with the details.

Databases

With an OpenAthens account, you have access to 3 healthcare database platforms containing several different databases:

For information on any of these platforms, please get in touch. To find out more about the database training sessions we offer, see the training section below.

Request an article

To check if you have access to an article with your Christie OpenAthens account, you can search for it via LibKey.io. If you would like to request access to an article you can fill out our request form on The Christie staff intranet HIVE or email the Library. There is no charge for this service.

Request a book

To search for a book or eBook, you can use our catalogue. If we don’t have the book that you are looking for, please let us know. We will either consider purchasing a copy or we will try to request to borrow a copy from another NHS Library.

Training

We offer a programme of training sessions designed to increase your information resource knowledge and save you time. These sessions can either be delivered to groups or 1-to-1 depending on your needs. You can either sign up to a scheduled training session on our HIVE page, or email us to arrange a session at a time to suit you.

Advanced Literature Search Training

Learn how to construct a search strategy, how to get the most out of the healthcare databases, and how to run your search.

This course is suitable for people who have a little prior experience of searching as well as people conducting literature searches for assignments or systematic reviews.

Critical Appraisal Training

Learn the basics of critical appraisal and using the CASP checklist. We offer 2 critical appraisal courses: a qualitative and a quantitative course.

This course is suitable for anyone required to critically read and use journal articles either professionally or academically.

Managing References with Mendeley

Learn how Mendeley can save you time academically or professionally. Mendeley lets you store all of the useful references you come across online in one place, organising them for your use in a variety of ways. You can also make use of the Microsoft Word plugin, Mendeley Cite, which adds your references into your documents for you.

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to keep track of their references, for assignments, their professional practice, a systematic review, or while writing academic papers.

Point-of-Care Tools

Point-of-care tools provide clinical summaries which allow you to access evidence-based information efficiently. As a Christie member of staff you have access to 2 point-of-care tools: UpToDate and BMJ Best Practice.

This course is suitable for any patient-facing roles, research roles, or anyone who wants access to digestible clinical information.

Introduction to Electronic Resources

Learn how to access all of the eResources you have access to as a member of Christie staff: eBooks, eJournals, databases, and various tools and programmes that we subscribe to to make your life easier.

This course is run on a 1-to-1 basis on request. Just email us to arrange a session with our Clinical Librarian.

Getting updates on areas of clinical or professional interest

If there is an area of clinical or professional interest you would like to stay updated on, we can help. Just email the Library with details of your topic of interest and we will either add you to an existing distribution list or create a bespoke alert for you.
