Peter Hook returns for 15th Great Manchester Run in support of The Christie Charity

News story posted 22 May 2026

Manchester music pioneer and co-founder of 2 of Manchester's most iconic bands, Peter Hook is set to take on the Great Manchester Run once again this May, marking his 15th appearance in support of The Christie Charity.

Best known as the co-founder and bassist of Joy Division, and later, New Order, 'Hooky' has become one of the Charity’s most dedicated long-term supporters. Since first lacing up his running shoes in preparation for the Great Manchester Run in 2006, he has played a key role in raising funds for The Christie Charity, which supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in continuing to deliver pioneering cancer treatment, research and care.

Following the news that Joy Division are set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Hooky celebrates a staggering 50 years in music on 4 June 2026, the same day he and his friends saw The Sex Pistols in Manchester and were inspired to form their own band.

Having lived a stone's throw from The Christie in Withington, Hooky first became aware of The Christie’s work after seeing patients travelling to and from the hospital for treatment. He also experienced The Christie firsthand when his close friends and family members were treated; former band manager Tony Wilson, musician Dave Dee (of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich) and his aunt and father-in-law.

Speaking ahead of this year’s event, Hooky said: “The Christie is something we should all be incredibly proud of. To have a world-leading cancer hospital here in Manchester is fantastic. I’ve had many friends treated at the hospital and some have had positive outcomes and others sadly not. But they, their friends and families have all received the same outstanding level of treatment, love and care and I can’t think of a better cause to support.”

Alicia Gaffey, mass participation events officer at The Christie Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to have the support of a Manchester legend such as Hooky. His ongoing dedication highlights the work we do, and inspires others to get involved, whether that’s running, donating or turning up and supporting the runners. Public support allows us to fund life-saving and life-changing treatments that benefit patients both today and for decades to come, and are above and beyond what the NHS funds."

Taking place on Sunday 31 May 2026, the Great Manchester Run is one of the UK’s most popular running events, attracting tens of thousands of participants each year. From elite athletes to first-time runners, the event brings the city together in a celebration of determination, community spirit and charitable giving.

The Christie Charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds. This includes money for care and treatment, research, education, and extra patient services. Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to cancer patients and their families.
