This month, we’re putting Worsley Wanderers FC into our fundraiser Hall of Fame for hosting a charity football match and raffle for The Christie Charity.
Worsley Wanderers FC is a grassroots women's football team in Manchester. Meghan Glynn and the rest of Worsley Wanderers FC were inspired to raise money for The Christie Charity in support of their coach Mike, who is a patient at The Christie. Mike has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, so the whole team were motivated to show their support by doing something that could be a massive success for the Charity.
Meghan and the rest of the team decided to organise a charity football match to raise money for The Christie Charity. They were able to plan for a match between their own players as Worsley Wanderers FC has 40 female football players. They gave themselves just 12 days to organise the charity football match, an incredibly short turnaround time.
With just a few days to pull everything together, Meghan and the rest of the team did everything they could to promote the charity football match. They did an interview on the radio and displayed details of the game on the side of The Axis building in Manchester city centre. Alongside the football match, Worsley Wanderers FC also organised a charity raffle, and they rallied up local businesses to support this.
The charity football match took place on 13 May 2024, with Monton Amateurs graciously allowing the team to use their football fields and clubhouse. Worsley Wanderers FC divided up into 2 teams of 11, one wearing the club’s old kit and one wearing their new kit. During the game, coach Mike even came on for 20 minutes to show off his skills!
Over 100 people attended the charity football match. Meghan said the event was a real success and even though it was a drizzly Monday evening, the rain didn’t put anyone off. They had a cake sale and raffle taking part during the game, and a DJ spinning discs to keep everyone dancing in the rain.
“The charity match was set and organised within 12 days! We never expected to raise as much money as we have. We are so proud to have been able to do this for our coach Mike and all the people The Christie Charity supports.
“Fundraising for The Christie was really straightforward and supportive, if we had any questions or if we needed support for the event. Even Adam who works for The Christie, giving us his Monday evening to come down and do the cheque presentation, it meant a lot to us!
