Nicola Dunwoodie, apprentice therapeutic radiographer

Nicola Dunwoodie is the winner of The Christie’s You Made a Difference Award for December 2025.

The following comments were made about Nicola in the December nominations. Judges picked her out as a very deserving winner and said that the comments made about her showed how she represents The Christie values and behaviours.

“Nicola’s joined the Trust in 2001 as a radiotherapy bookings administrator and in 2024 started in her current role as an apprentice therapeutic radiographer. This role was new to the Trust and Nicola was successful in her application for one of 5 positions available, showing her dedication and commitment to the job. This role enables Nicola to study for a degree in radiotherapy whilst also gaining her clinical skills working ‘on the job.’ She has academic weeks throughout the year where she attends online lectures and teaching via Sheffield Hallam University and her remining time is spent clinically in radiotherapy. This not only includes Withington but also across all the radiotherapy centres and protons. Nicola works as part of the team of radiographers treating and caring for patients attending for their radiotherapy, whether this is attending for their planning scans or for their daily radiotherapy sessions and offering support and advice throughout their journey.

“Nicola is very deserving of this award as she works hard and is committed to her role. She balances her academic and clinical responsibilities and always strives to deliver the best service. She works well as part of the team and is not afraid to take on new challenges. I regularly receive excellent feedback from other staff members that she is working with and her care and commitment to patients shines through.

When she is not spending her time studying, Nicola likes to spend time with her partner and children, and they regularly try to go away on camping trips both in the UK and abroad. They almost bought a camper van last year – something which I think Nicola would still like to do.

Craig Jones, radiotherapy clinical educator/manager

“Very courteous and compassionate. Ready smiles and interested in my life outside, for example, “did you enjoy the concert last night” – and is commissioned as a minister in the Catholic church, she was very interested in how it went. A super star in the making.”
