The Christie is committed to supporting people with learning disabilities, autistic people, and people with other additional needs, as well as their family and carers.
If you have any additional needs – such as autism, a learning disability or a physical disability – please notify a member of staff involved in your care so that we can do all we can to make your hospital visit as easy as possible.
Reasonable adjustments
If you have additional needs and require reasonable adjustments, please notify a member of staff involved in your care. Reasonable adjustments may include:
- Longer appointments so you have extra time at your appointment to explain things and answer your questions
- Booking the first or last appointment of the day
- Arranging a quiet area to wait in
- Accessible easy read information about your care and treatment
- Providing information in alternative formats
- Allowing your family and carers to stay with you if needed
- Showing you what to expect when you come for treatment – for example, showing you where you will have treatment and what will happen
- Other adaptations to help you access treatment and care
- Including your family and or carers when you need them for support
Digital flag
With your consent, we will include a digital flag on your patient record so that everyone you encounter whilst receiving care and treatment at The Christie will know what reasonable adjustments you require.
Hospital passport
A hospital passport contains information about a patient’s likes, dislikes and needs, and are written in an easy read format.
If you have a learning disability or are autistic, you may already have a hospital passport. If you do, please show this to hospital staff during any visit to The Christie, so that they can add a copy to your patient record.
If you do not, we might ask you for information to complete a hospital passport which can help staff understand your needs.
If you think that you or a person you are caring for needs a hospital passport, please ask a member of staff.
