Tom trained as a pharmacist at Manchester University before joining the NHS general management training scheme in 2003. Tom has gone onto senior management positions across acute services mental health and specialist care and continued his development through the NHS Leadership Academy.
Tom originally joined The Christie in 2007 working in a divisional management role before being promoted to managing director for Research and Education, developing both functions and the collaborations with public and private partners.
In 2015, he was appointed as Executive Director of Strategy at North Staffordshire Combined Health Care leading on the strategic planning and integration with the GP federation and social care services.
In 2017, Tom returned to The Christie and took up the role of Director of Strategy for The Christie and Greater Manchester Cancer, supporting the improvement in patient outcomes for Greater Manchester patients. He played a key role in The Christie’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic planning, the sustainability of services and supporting neighbouring trusts in continuing cancer care.
In August 2021, Tom became a Christie patient himself undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy and three operations before returning to work in 2024. Tom has now taken up the role of Future Christie Director, drawing upon his professional and patient experience to set the Trust on a large-scale modernisation agenda.
