If you have a strong interest in Oncology, please email the-christie.medicaleducation@nhs.net with your required dates and specific area of interest. As a Trust we will try to facilitate these requests as far as possible without them having an impact on other educational placements.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate these requests at The Christie. We do try and accommodate as many students as we can however due to our commitments to the Manchester Medical School we do not have capacity to accept elective students from medical schools outside of the UK.
You may be better applying to a larger Trust such as University Hospital of South Manchester (Wythenshawe), Central Manchester Foundation Trust (Manchester Royal Infirmary) or Salford Royal Foundation Trust (Hope Hospital).
All future elective requests are temporarily suspended until further notice!
There are a number of wards and departments which accept elective placement requests. Elective placements must form part of your university programme and individuals should complete the following application form. For more information please contact mathew.stephenson@nhs.net or telephone 0161 918 7367 to discuss available options.

We are delighted to announce that we are now accepting requests for work experience placements.
Work experience at The Christie is a structured programme to support vocational or sector-based programmes of learning. It is designed so that individuals can relate their learning to the working environment in an oncological setting. This can be arranged locally in agreement with the department manager of the chosen area. Placements typically range from 1 to 2 weeks.
We would like to express that while we are the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe and committed to facilitating learning, we must ensure equal and fair access to placements. There will be a waiting list for applicants and unfortunately it is not possible to accept all of these requests. Work experience places may be restricted in certain parts of the hospital and/or have age restrictions associated to the placement.
Please note that no work experience may be undertaken by children below the age of 14 years. Young people aged 16 and below are not permitted to enter clinical areas or have any patient contact. Young people aged 17 and above may enter clinical areas for observation purposes only. They must be always accompanied by a member of staff, and permission must be obtained from any patients and staff present. Students within the local area are advised to check with their career advisor if their school or college is part of the programme.
Please send enquires to the-christie.workexperience@nhs.net and we will respond as soon as we can with an application form to complete and return.
