Salivary gland cancers

Cancer in the salivary gland is very rare. Patients tend to present with a lump in the glands on the side of the jaw or under the chin.

Treatments for salivary gland cancer can include surgery and radiotherapy.

This is a diagram showing the anatomy of the salivary glands. It includes the lymph nodes, the parotid gland, the tongue, the sublingual gland and the submandibular gland.

The Christie is a lead referral site in the UK for patients with salivary gland cancers that have spread to other parts of the body. When cancer spreads, this is called ‘secondary’ cancer or ‘metastases’.
