The proton beam therapy (PBT) admin and support team includes the following staff members: receptionists, clinical support workers, health care assistants and schedulers.
Receptionists are one of the first points of contact for patients arriving at the PBT centre. They greet patients on arrival, confirm contact information and check other details relevant to the visit. They also guide patients to the correct waiting area and direct them to the available facilities.
The receptionist team provide patients with future appointment weekly schedules, as well as booking any additional requirements (such as hospital transport or interpreters).
Clinical support workers (CSWs) have many clinical responsibilities and work in several areas in the PBT department. They support our health play specialist (HPS) team, assist pre-treatment radiographers to create patient immobilisation devices and liaise with treatment radiographers to ensure efficient treatment gantry running.
Health care assistants (HCAs) co-ordinate patient site-specific clinics within the PBT centre. HCAs are trained to perform a range of clinical skills. The team also arrange follow up appointments within the PBT department.
Schedulers, along with all of the above responsibilities, attend multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings in order to arrange the patients’ PBT treatment scheduling. They book appointments for consent, pre-treatment, AHP and treatment as well as any additional bookings such as accommodation. They liaise with pre-treatment, treatment and general anaesthetic team staff to schedule departmental lists as efficiently as possible.
