The general anaesthetic (GA) team care for patients who will be under general anaesthetic for their treatment. The GA team is comprised of consultant anaesthetists, operating department practitioners (ODPs) and recovery nurses from The Christie and the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH). The general anaesthetic team will meet patients and carers before planning scans or before treatment each day to ensure patients are well enough to be put under anaesthetic.
The GA team works alongside radiographers in the pre-treatment scanners and proton treatment gantries to constantly monitor the patient's wellbeing. After patients have had general anaesthetic, the team will also provide care for the patient to ensure a safe recovery afterwards. The team also provide daily care procedures for patients, such as changing line dressings or performing blood tests.
