Press release posted 24 June 2024
The highly anticipated Norton Barrie Golf Day is set to take place on Friday 5 July 2024 at the prestigious Northenden Golf Club.
This annual event, held in memory of Barrie Norton, the founder of the renowned designer menswear store Norton Barrie, promises to be the biggest and most successful yet in support of The Christie Charity.
Barrie Norton established the designer menswear store in Chorlton, Manchester back in 1969. The store, which relocated to Wilmslow in 1999, quickly became famous for dressing sports teams and celebrities, including George Best, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, and many more. Barrie’s passion for sport and style lives on through this annual golf event, which was first held in July 2009 and has since become a popular tradition.
Now in its 16th year, the Norton Barrie Golf Day continues to grow, attracting around 256 golfers. The event not only celebrates Barrie’s love for golf but also serves as a significant fundraiser for The Christie, where Barrie received treatment for throat cancer before he died in 2008.
40-year-old Blake Norton, Barrie’s son, now runs the business and has upheld his father’s legacy of unique styling and personal service along with creating an online presence with the Norton Barrie website. Blake has also taken on the mantle of organising the annual golf day, ensuring it remains a fitting tribute to his father.
Over the years, the event has seen participation from a host of sports and television celebrities, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Andy Cole, Graham Souness, Frank Stapleton, Max George, and Alan Halsall.
The Norton Barrie Golf Day will feature 2 shotgun starts at 9.30am and 2.45pm, spreading the teams across the Northenden Golf Club course. Participants will receive a luxurious Norton Barrie goody bag which includes a BOSS polo shirt and will enjoy a day filled with competitive golf and camaraderie, all while contributing to a worthy cause.
“Each year, the support we receive is overwhelming. and we are thrilled to see how much it grows,” commented Blake. “The Norton Barrie Golf Day is more than just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of my father’s life and passions. This event not only honours his memory but also raises vital funds for The Christie, where he was treated. We look forward to another fantastic day of golf, community, and giving.”
Anna McIntosh, Corporate Fundraising Manager at The Christie Charity said: “Since 2009, when the first Norton Barrie event took place, over £175,000 has been raised for The Christie Charity, which is fantastic! This has made a huge difference on all the services at The Christie hospital.
“We’d like to say a massive thank you to Blake and everyone who organises the golf events and makes them happen. We hope this one is another huge success."
