Press release posted 27 September 2024
In a remarkable demonstration of commitment and dedication, 9 consultant surgeons from The Christie hospital will swap their scrubs for running vests on Sunday 13 October 2024 to take on the Manchester Half Marathon. The team, organised by urological surgeon Aziz Gulamhusein, aims to raise essential funds for The Christie Charity to support patients and their families during their cancer journey.
Aziz, aged 40 from Heaton Moor, is a passionate long-distance runner and was inspired to rally his colleagues for this challenge after witnessing first-hand the significant and life-changing impact The Christie Charity has on individuals and families affected by cancer, as he explains: "Every day, we have the privilege of seeing the incredible work The Christie Charity does to support our patients—not only through funding cutting-edge research and treatments but also by providing emotional and practical support to patients and their families during what is often the most difficult time of their lives.
"We wanted to do more than just talk about the difference the Charity makes; we wanted to take action, to give something back. Running the half marathon together as a team feels like the perfect way to do that. It’s a physical challenge for us, but it pales in comparison to the challenges our patients face every day. We’re proud to do our bit to ensure the vital work of The Christie Charity continues."
The team consists of surgeons Omer Aziz, Panos Christopoulos, Thomas Lee, Jeremy Oates, Paul Sutton, Jonathan Wild, Lorena Martin Roman, and David Mowatt, who will all join Aziz on the starting line. Together, they will run 13.1 miles starting at Old Trafford through to Chorlton and Sale and then ending back at Old Trafford.
The Manchester Half Marathon is a major annual event, drawing in over 24,000 participants this year. It is renowned for its flat course, lively atmosphere, and enthusiastic crowd support, as well as featuring plenty of entertainment in the way of live music and DJs.
“Whether it’s running a race or performing surgery, we’re in this together as a team,” Aziz added. “We wanted to set an example and show our patients that they’re not alone. The Christie Charity is a lifeline for so many, and the funds raised from this event will help sustain critical programs, improve patient care, and ultimately give hope to families when they need it most. Every donation, big or small, has the power to make a difference in someone’s life.”

The Christie Charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds. This includes money for care and treatment, research, education, and extra patient services. Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to patients and their families.
