Press release posted 12 April 2024
This Sunday (14 April 2024), Exeter University medical student Olivia Downs will be travelling all the way ‘up north’ to run the Manchester Marathon to raise money for The Christie Charity and in memory of her sister Carly and her uncle Alex, who both sadly died in 2023. They were treated for cancer at The Christie hospital in Manchester.
“Carly was the best big sister I could have ever asked for and I miss her so, so much,” 23-year-old Olivia said. “She never gave up fighting even when she had so much thrown her way. She fought cervical cancer for five long years though never really complained about anything and was just her lovely bubbly self. Her courage, kindness and confidence inspires me every day and I want to make her proud and keep remembering just how amazing she was."
“Alex was such a fun uncle, always laughing and never taking life too seriously. He bravely fought his brain tumour against all odds and continued to live life to the fullest.
“Carly and Alex were always helping each other to get through all that they were going through. Lots of their treatment was done at The Christie meaning they'd spend a lot of time there and get lots of support from the brilliant staff who work there,” added Olivia. “I would love to raise as much money as I can so that I can contribute this back to help support The Christie in their amazing work in helping people to fight cancer.”

The Christie Charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS is able to fund. This includes money for care and treatment, research, education, and extra patient services. Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to patients and their families.
