Rory is supporting The Christie Charity after his wife Danielle was treated for breast cancer at The Christie. Danielle was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2022 while she and Rory were living in Malta.

Danielle and Rory knew The Christie was one of Europe’s leading cancer centres and on top of that, it was also close to their family and friends. So, they flew back to the UK so Danielle could receive her treatment at The Christie.

Rory says that Danielle’s treatment is going well – she’s currently having weekly chemotherapy at The Christie. He also says that her clinical team have made them feel assured and confident, and that the power of The Christie is behind them.

To say thank you for Danielle’s treatment, Rory and a group of 6 friends are taking on the Great Manchester Run for The Christie Charity as Danni's Army.

The Great Manchester Run is Manchester’s greatest day of running, held this year on Sunday 21 May 2023. You can take on either the 10km or half-marathon distance and help us to achieve our goal of a future without cancer. Rory says that although he and the other lads are unfit, they want to give something back to an amazing cause – even with the current cost of living. He adds that treatment at the Christie has been a real lifeline and that he and Danielle are incredibly grateful for the unsung heroes in the ward.

The Great Manchester Run 10k 2023 was the ideal event for Rory and the team to take on, as it’s a realistic distance when all the lads have family and work commitments. Rory says that they also aren’t runners or athletes so getting the running bug wasn’t going to be easy.

“Along with some very close friends, we agreed that we wanted to give back to The Christie and in turn help others access the best treatment. The Manchester 10k was the ideal as none of us are, were or will ever be runners, so a great challenge.
“The training is going well although some of the dark, wet, early mornings make you focus on how fortunate we are.”
