Liz Hodkinson Jones and her family have been supporters of The Christie Charity since her dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, after a routine bowel screening. Liz’s dad had surgery for the cancer but after going into remission, the cancer came back for a second and third time.
In 2022, Liz’s dad was referred to the Colorectal and Peritoneal Oncology Centre (CPOC) at The Christie for cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC, a complex surgery and chemotherapy combination that’s only offered at a small number of hospitals.
Liz’s dad is still being treated at The Christie, and Liz said that the whole family have been so appreciative of the treatment and support he’s had from the hospital. Both Liz and her sister Becky decided that they wanted to fundraise for The Christie Charity so that they could give something back to The Christie.
After doing some research, Liz and her family decided to host a Cuppa for the Christie event in November 2024 to raise money for The Christie Charity. Cuppa for The Christie is where a group of friends, family members or colleagues get together to have a brew, a slice of cake and a catch up. Every attendee donates a small amount to The Christie Charity – so you can fundraise while having fun.
Liz and her family also decided to plan a few extras for the day – a raffle, tombola, Christmas crafts and face painting. They spoke to Adam from The Christie Charity who supported Liz and her family throughout the event.
“We chose a local football club to host our event where my dad had played football for many years. We advertised our event on Facebook and put posters up outside our houses. We approached local businesses, friends and family to donate prizes for our raffle and tombola and we were absolutely blown away by the generosity of what people donated. Prizes ranged from a week’s accommodation in Spain, massages, hair products, a round of golf, photo shoots, food vouchers and many more.
“Once we had gathered all the prizes for the raffle and tombola, we began to sell raffle tickets and then the only thing left to do was bake. Therefore myself, my husband Chris and my mum started to bake many yummy treats including caramel shortbread, old school cake, tiffin and chocolate brownies.
“The day finally arrived, we were excited and nervous hoping everything would go to plan. The team of troops arrived to set up the room, we set up the tombola, the raffle and most importantly the coffee and cake stall. The event soon commenced and people began to flood in, we couldn't believe how many came to show their support and the room was nearly at capacity. We drew the raffle on the day and gave away some fantastic prizes.
“At the end of the event, we were all exhausted but extremely happy on how the day had gone. We sat down for a well-deserved coffee and piece of cake and began to count the money raised.
