This month, we’re putting Astbury Golf Club into our fundraiser Hall of Fame for making The Christie Charity their charity of the year for 2024.

Astbury Golf Club captains Ian Coffey and Jane Pickup took office in October 2023, and nominated The Christie Charity as their chosen charity to support for the year. Ian and Jane said The Christie Charity was always their first choice of charity as Ian himself had been a patient at the hospital. They also had many close friends still receiving treatment at The Christie.

From October 2023 to October 2024, Astbury Golf Club dedicated themselves to raising funds for The Christie Charity. They organised a whole range of fundraising events from fashions Shows, coffee mornings and raffles, to charity ‘bunkers and ponds’ donations, a book exchange and even raffling off a dedicated charity car park space.

But Astbury Golf Club’s main fundraising event was their captains’ charity open event in August 2024. Over 180 golfers from far and wide descended on the club, with gents, ladies and juniors all taking part. Each of the 18 holes are sponsored by local businesses, friends and Astbury Golf Club members, with every hole also having its own competition.

The captains’ charity open event was also sponsored by Bilyana Golf Holidays who gave an amazing £800 golfing holiday voucher to the overall winning team. Everyone had a great time and the day wrapped up with a barbecue.

Both Ian and Jane worked extremely hard to pull off the captains’ charity open event – not just on the day itself but also throughout the year to plan and organise the day, and to secure the much-needed sponsorship to make the day a success. As well as Ian and Jane’s tireless efforts, members of the Astbury Golf Club also volunteered their time to make sure the day ran smoothly.

“To be able to present this cheque to The Christie Charity was a such a humbling but extremely proud moment for all the members of Astbury Golf Club, made even more special by receiving this recognition by The Christie for such a tremendous donation to such a worthy cause.

On behalf of Astbury Golf Club, we would like to express our eternal gratitude to The Christie for recognising the efforts of all who helped to raise this this phenomenal amount.

Ian and Jane from Astbury Golf Club, Christie fundraisers

We’d like to say a big thank you to Astbury Golf Club for everything they did to fundraise for The Christie Charity while we were their charity of the year. They managed to raise an amazing £10,535 in support The Christie Charity. Fundraisers like Astbury Golf Club help us keep supporting cancer patients and their loved ones, over and above what the NHS can fund.
