The Blue Light Runners are a group of police officers and police community support officers from Wrexham. They decided to fundraise for The Christie Charity as the team have 2 family members currently being treated at the hospital.

One member of the team, Lara, wanted to raise money for The Christie Charity as her identical twin sister, Anna, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in March 2024. Lara said that watching Anna go through treatment has shown her just how much of a lifeline The Christie is for patients and families like hers.

As well as Lara’s twin sister, a former colleague Robina is also being treated at The Christie for ovarian cancer. Robina’s daughter Sofia still works with the team and wanted to show support for The Christie and her mum’s treatment.

Alison Heron from the Blue Light Runners had the idea to enter a team into the Altrincham 10K in September 2024 to fundraise for The Christie Charity. A generally flat event, the closed road Altrincham 10K starts and finishes in Altrincham Town Centre. The Christie Charity is a partner charity for the run, which returns in September 2025.

To help boost their fundraising, Alison also managed a cake sale in work, which she said was very successful.

“The Christie has been with [my sister] Anna every step of the way. She’s already completed chemotherapy and is now in recovery after a mastectomy. Throughout this difficult journey, the support, compassion, and expertise of The Christie team have been invaluable. The team has been a source of hope and strength throughout her treatment and will continue to be as she moves into the next phase.

Running for The Christie Charity was our way to give back. By raising funds, we’re supporting research into new treatments and helping to ensure that more patients receive the same level of incredible care that Anna has. We’re deeply grateful for everything The Christie has done and will continue to do as Anna starts her next phase of treatment.

“The Christie has been an incredible source of support and care for my mum [Robina], and this run was a way for me and the team to give back to the charity that has made such a difference in our lives.

Every donation helps fund vital cancer treatments, research, and support services for those in need. I am deeply grateful for the generosity of everyone who has supported this cause and helped make a positive impact in the fight against cancer.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to the Blue Light Runners for taking on the Altrincham 10K. Their fabulous fundraising efforts raised an amazing £3,000 in support of The Christie Charity. Fundraisers like the Blue Light Runners help us keep supporting cancer patients and their loved ones, over and above what the NHS can fund.
