Culcheth Walking Football Club, Christie fundraisers
This month, we’re putting the Culcheth Walking Football Club into our fundraiser hall of fame. The Culcheth Walking Football Club started just 5 years ago and now has more than 50 members.
As well as being passionate about exercise, the Culcheth Walking Football Club are also strong supporters of The Christie charity. This is because several of the team members have a personal connection to cancer through family members.
To raise money for The Christie charity, the Culcheth Walking Football Club organised The Culcheth Cup, a walking football tournament. Involving multiple teams from across Warrington and the surrounding areas, The Culcheth Cup was originally planned for March 2020.
But after a delay of more than 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Culcheth Cup finally took place at Culcheth High School on Saturday 1 October 2022.
Around 200 players from 19 teams took part in the tournament, all coming from around the North West and North Wales. 4 teams took part from Culcheth as well – the Walkers, the Strollers, the Amblers, and the Wanderers.
On the day of The Culcheth Cup, all 4 Culcheth walking football teams did better than they were hoping and managed to make it to the quarter finals. But unfortunately, the Culcheth teams were then drawn against each other, meaning only 2 of them made it to the semi-finals.
“Our best team, Culcheth Walkers, got to the final but they unfortunately lost to Bolton Arena's Wanderers, 5-0.
"Our club members were very keen to help fundraise for The Christie, as a few of them knew of someone amongst their friends and families who received treatment at the hospital. I do as well, and there is no better way to fundraise than mixing it with an activity we all enjoy."
- Yannis Nicolaidis, Culcheth Walking Football Club Secretary and organiser of The Culcheth Cup
The team raised just short of an amazing £4,050 for The Christie charity. We’d like to say a big thanks to the Culcheth Walking Football Club – their incredible fundraising efforts will make a huge difference towards supporting cancer patients and their loved ones.
