Physiotherapy plays an important role in supporting patients before, during, and after proton beam therapy. Staying active can help maintain physical function and manage treatment-related side effects. It can also support patients’ recovery, independence, and overall wellbeing.
The proton beam physiotherapist provides personalised support tailored to each patient’s needs. This may include:
- Comprehensive assessment to understand individual needs and set meaningful and achievable goals
- Individual rehabilitation programmes to optimise function during and after treatment
- Tailored exercise plans to maintain or improve strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination
- Supervised gym-based exercise sessions (where appropriate)
- Assessment and support with mobility, including advice and provision of equipment if needed
- Advice on maintaining safe levels of physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices during treatment
- Guidance on continuing exercise, physiotherapy, or activity at home after treatment has finished
- Referral to other services for ongoing rehabilitation or specialist support when required
- Signposting to local activity opportunities, such as gyms, sports groups, and community programmes
- Advice on local initiatives and community services that promote safe and sustainable physical activity
- Recommendations for trusted online resources to support exercise and self-management at home
Physiotherapy support is available to all proton beam patients aged 16 and over, throughout treatment and following completion of therapy.
If you feel physiotherapy may be helpful, please speak to any member of your proton beam team to arrange a referral to the proton beam physiotherapist.
