The Christie penile cancer team were proud to share work from their specialist service at the British Association of Urological Surgeons Annual Scientific Meeting — BAUS 2026.

BAUS is an important national meeting where urology teams come together to share learning and improve patient care. For a rare cancer such as penile cancer, it is important that patients’ experiences and specialist research remain visible.

A highlight for the team was winning the Best Poster Prize for our work on p16 in penile cancer. The poster, “Rising incidence of penile squamous cell carcinoma and p16 distribution trends,” was led by Joecelyn Kirani Tan, a medical student working with The Christie penile cancer team, and presented by Rosalind Walsh.

p16 is a marker that can be linked with HPV-related penile cancer. By studying markers such as p16, we hope to better understand why penile cancers can behave differently from one patient to another. This may help improve how we talk to patients about their cancer and support future improvements in treatment and follow-up.

The Christie team also contributed to the wider penile cancer programme at BAUS, with Mr Arie Parnham, Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Christie, chairing a penile cancer session. This helped bring specialist teams together to share experience and learning in a rare cancer that many hospitals see only occasionally.

This is a fantastic achievement for Rosalind,  Jocelyn and the wider Christie penile cancer team. It reflects the strength of our collaborative research programme and, most importantly, our commitment to improving care for men affected by this rare cancer.

Professor Sangar, Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Christie

We are grateful to our patients and families, whose experiences continue to shape our service and research. Recognition at BAUS is very welcome, but our aim remains simple: to improve care, support and outcomes for men affected by penile cancer.
