Working with the Egypt Healthcare Authority on capacity build within their cancer care services
In 2024, The Christie signed an agreement for a project working with NHSE (Global), Stellar Consulting, and the Egypt Healthcare Authority (EHA). The objective of the project is to build capacity and develop integrated cancer care at an existing EHA hospital based in Ismailia. Learnings from this hospital would then be shared widely with other hospitals in their network throughout Egypt.
To date, The Christie has successfully delivered several educational activities including review and feedback of a gap analysis survey, and review and feedback on a report of the current workings at Ismailia. This then led onto the development and delivery of an in-person workshop, held in Cairo during November 2024.
3 members of The Christie – Professor Sarah O’Dwyer, Professor Mark Saunders and Rachel Chown – delivered and facilitated the workshop in person, with a further 14 Christie colleagues joining virtually to give expert talks and participate in discussions. The team took part in a tour and gave presentations at the Ismailia hospital site, and then facilitated a 2-day workshop in Cairo. This workshop covered a range of topics and disciplines, many of which had been identified as priorities by our partners and were presented in relation to the value and importance of the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
Disease areas of focus during the programme included genito-urinary, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, colorectal and breast cancer. The team also covered areas such as pathways, guidelines, audits, research, and education; and facilitated a mock MDT with the wider colorectal team, with nursing, radiology and pathology joining virtually from Manchester.
The Christie team has since provided a report on their work to the teams in Egypt, and the partners of this project are now working on a second phase which will involve additional online training and an observership visit to Manchester by a colleague from the EHA team.
The project also allows The Christie School of Oncology to extend its global reach by providing such education and training opportunities, including through observerships at The Christie.
