The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at The Christie is a leading centre for clinical trials, testing the latest advancements in cancer treatment. It is one of 28 purpose-built NIHR facilities across England delivering early phase and experimental medicine research.

Here's what makes our research facility special:

  • Dedicated resources: We provide the space, equipment and highly skilled staff to ensure clinical trials are conducted safely and effectively.
  • Pioneering research: The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the largest single site cancer centre in the UK, with the Manchester CRF at The Christie supporting over 500 active trials across all disease groups.
  • First-in-human trials: The CRF at The Christie is at the forefront of delivering innovative cancer research trials, leading first-in-human studies and early-phase complex clinical trials.
  • Strong industry partnerships: Hosting more cancer clinical trials for industry than any other CRF, we accelerate the development of new therapies.

The CRF at The Christie is located in the Oak Road Treatment Centre (department 1) and includes dedicated spaces for research including outpatient clinics, a phlebotomy room, and ‘short-stay’ and ‘long-stay’ areas for both outpatient and inpatient treatments. There is also a CRF laboratory that provides support for all types of clinical trials.

The NIHR Manchester CRF is the largest and most comprehensive NIHR CRF in the UK, dedicated to enabling cutting-edge clinical research across a wide range of clinical areas.

It operates across 6 sites in NHS teaching hospitals across Greater Manchester, including The Christie, Manchester Royal Infirmary, North Manchester General Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) and Salford Royal Hospital (Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust).
