If you’re a patient at the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility at The Christie, here's a summary of important information to help you during your visit.
Meals
We provide an inpatient menu with hot and cold options. A member of staff will take your order daily. Please inform staff of any dietary requirements on admission.
Visiting hours
Recommended visiting hours are 10am to 5pm but we can be flexible so please speak with a team member for advice. During research activities, we may ask your visitors to wait elsewhere. Visits from children 12 years or younger are restricted.
Call bell
When you're admitted to the Clinical Research Facility, you will be given a call bell at your bedside to alert nursing staff if you need anything. While they will prioritise your requests, please note there may be delays during busy times.
Staff handover
The team will carry out a bedside handover during shift changes at 7.30am and 7:30pm. This includes discussing your treatment, medications, and care. We encourage you to take part as your input is important.
Medications
Please bring all your current medications in their original boxes or pre-dispensed pill (Dossett) boxes. If you are self-medicating, a self-medication assessment will be conducted when you are admitted.
Personal items
It is important to always have clear access around beds so a small cupboard is provided for your use. To make your stay more comfortable, you may wish to bring:
- slippers or comfortable indoor shoes (ensure they are well-fitting)
- your own towels (though towels can be provided upon request)
- night wear (pyjamas, bathrobe, etc.)
- toiletries (wash bag, toothbrush, deodorant, etc.)

Additional blankets can be provided upon request. Please do not bring hot water bottles or microwavable heat packs.
Wi-Fi
The “NHS Free Wi-Fi” network is available all patients and visitors to the Trust.
On-site facilities
During your stay there are various on-site facilities you may wish to use. Please see the patients and visitors facilities section of our website to see what’s available and please check with nursing staff before leaving the unit, as it may affect your treatment delivery.
