Barbara Goodman, Christie volunteer

Barbara Goodman is one of our volunteer admin assistants at The Christie who dedicates a large part of her life to volunteering. She has volunteered at The Christie since 2014 and is currently working in our endocrinology department.

In addition to her role at The Christie, Barbara is also a culture secretary for a charity where she organises speakers. She also visits the Belong Morris Feinmann home to help at their coffee mornings.

Barbara’s hobbies include entertaining – baking for tea parties and giving dinner parties to friends and playing the piano. She has even made tapestries whilst watching TV, and loves plants and the garden.

Music is Barbara’s favourite hobby – she goes on musical holidays, attends a music appreciation course, and is a keen follower of opera and classical music concerts.

Barbara has a keen interest in her local community and has been involved with a local adoption centre for 30 years, her local Citizen’s Advice Bureau (CAB) for 40 years and she is also Chair of a Jewish special school. Her biggest achievement to date is undoubtedly receiving an MBE for services to the community, and she was completely overwhelmed by receiving this honour.

Her role models were her parents, and she now looks up to 2 women – one 95 years old and the other 100 years old – who are quite inspirational in their attitudes and their outlooks on life.

My favourite thing about the Christie is the friendliness of all I meet there. The atmosphere is always bright and cheerful and welcoming to patients.
