Anup Shanthappa, senior clinical research nurse

Anup Shanthappa is the winner of The Christie’s You Made a Difference Award for April 2024. The following comments were made about Anup in the April nominations.

The judges picked Anup out as a very deserving winner and said that the comments made about him showed how he represented The Christie values and behaviours.

“Anup is the senior clinical research nurse for the colorectal research team. He has recently been promoted into the senior nurse role to provide leadership to the team on a day-to-day basis. He has also recently completed his non-medical prescribing programme and has made a great start on implementing this into his practice for the benefit of our clinical trial patients. Anup has day-to-day responsibility for leading the colorectal research delivery team providing opportunities for our colorectal patients to take part in clinical trials which may be of benefit to them and future patients.

“I believe Anup was nominated for his dedication, commitment, and hard work! Anup has recently (over the last 6 months) taken up the senior research nurse role for the colorectal research team and during that time has settled into his role well and provides high levels of compassionate leadership to the team on a daily basis. Anup is always caring, kind and compassionate and always goes the extra mile for his patients and staff. The award is so well deserved in recognition of this hard work, care, compassion, and commitment.

“Anup is a self-confessed introvert and loves spending time at home with his cats, Ollie and Mya and has recently got 2 kittens that have been keeping him busy. Anup also loves going out to nice eateries around Manchester with his partner and friends and loves to cook for family, friends, and colleagues. He often brings food in for the team to taste including ice cream! Anup also enjoys travel when has time off work.”

  - Sally Pearson, lead nurse and manager

“Anup was the very first person I spoke to at The Christie almost 12 months ago and since then, he has guided me through every step of the way. I have relied on him for absolutely everything from organising my appointments, sorting out referrals, prescriptions, helping with many different symptoms, helping me through the genetics process, the list goes on! Anup is always very responsive to emails and calls. He is also extremely knowledgeable and super organised. Having someone like that to support you through the cancer journey makes a huge difference. He has taken care of so many things for me so that I didn't have to worry about them.

“Anup has an absolutely lovely, friendly manner about him. He always has a smile and makes time for a chat. He even came to see me on the ward post-surgery, and it made such a difference to see a familiar face.

Having cancer has been very tough and lots of people have helped me along in different ways but Anup stands out – he is very special and has certainly helped to make things a little lighter for me whilst I was going though treatment and continues to do so now with my follow-ups.
