Overview 

The aim of this workshop is to explore evidence-based principles, skills and strategies that enhance compassionate and effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues and to experience and practice these in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Learning objectives 

• Recognise the relevance of patients’ emotions and the importance of establishing their concerns to provide effective care
• Discuss the barriers to compassionate communication
• Identify transferable communication strategies for difficult situations such as handling distress or anger, end of life conversations, difficult questions and complex information-giving

Health and social care professionals who have these challenging conversations as part of their day-to-day work, and wish to enhance their skills.
