Responsibilities
Dr Braun runs new patient and follow-up clinics for patients treated with chemotherapy for colorectal cancer. He runs a separate clinical trial clinic for patients enrolled to local, national and international studies. Dr Braun attends the colorectal/pelvic cancer multi-disciplinary meeting at The Christie to provide oncology input.
Dr Braun attends the colorectal cancer multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDT) and has a weekly clinics at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Leighton Hospital, Crewe.
Professional biography
Dr Braun has been a consultant in medical oncology at The Christie since 2009. Prior to this, he trained in Leeds and has a PhD on molecular biomarkers in colorectal cancer. He specialises in treating patients with cancers of the large bowel (colon and/or rectum).
Dr Braun has gained significant experience as a clinician, clinical trialist and educational leader. He has previously acted as research lead for the Colorectal Pathway Board of Manchester Cancer and has also acted as the Training Programme Director for Medical Oncology in the North Western Deanery. He is co-lead for the National Bowel Cancer Audit. He is a member of the NCRI Colorectal Cancer Clinical Studies Group. Dr Braun was an author contributing to the 2020 NICE Colorectal Cancer Guidelines.
Research Interest
Dr Braun runs local and international studies through trials clinics based at The Christie. Dr Braun has developed an interest in the management of BRAF V600E metastatic colorectal cancer and has run a number of clinical trials investigating treatments for this sub-type of bowel cancer including the BEACON trial. Dr Braun has acted as local principal investigator for national academic studies such as FOCUS-4, FOXTROT-1, etc.
Dr Braun is a member of the trial management group for the FOXTROT trial platform including the FOXTROT-2 and FOXTROT-3 studies. The National Bowel Cancer Audit provides opportunities to assess the variation in care and outcomes for bowel cancer patients in England and Wales. Dr Braun has led the expansion of the audit to assess variation in chemotherapy and radiotherapy usage.
Educational Interests
Dr Braun has previously acted as training programme director for medical oncology for the North West Deanery. He is an active educational and clinical supervisor for junior and middle-grade doctors at The Christie. He also supervises nurse clinicians and medical students on attachment to The Christie.
