Professional biography
Professor Cowan qualified in London in 1980 and embarked on postgraduate training in London, including oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital, before moving to Sheffield to complete general medical training in 1983.
He arrived at The Christie as a Cancer Research UK Research Fellow in 1984 and completed an MD thesis under the supervision of Professor Derek Crowther.
In 1992 he was appointed Consultant in Clinical Oncology at The Christie. Professor Cowan's clinical practice initially focused on urological cancer and on the management of patients with malignant lymphoma. Since 2010, his clinical practice and research has exclusively been dedicated to malignant lymphoma.
Between 2006 and 2011, he was Chair of the UK Cutaneous Lymphoma Group. In 2009, he became Director of Education at The Christie and was responsible for the launch of The Christie School of Oncology dedicated to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate educational opportunities in oncology across the whole spectrum of professionals involved in cancer and palliative care.
Between 2005 and 2011, Professor Cowan was an examiner in clinical oncology for The Royal College of Radiologists. He continues to sit on a number of national research committees.
In 2012 he was appointed Manchester Academic Health Science Professor of Clinical Oncology within the Institute of Cancer Sciences/Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, University of Manchester.
