Professional biography
Dr Summers studied undergraduate medicine at St Andrews University and moved to Manchester University in 1990 to complete her clinical training. Between 1997 and 2004 she trained in medical oncology at The Christie and during this period she was awarded a PhD for research in the field of stem cell biology at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (now the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute). She took up her first consultant post at Belfast City Hospital in 2004 where she developed medical oncology services and clinical research for lung cancer patients.
In 2009 she returned to Manchester to join the Lung Cancer Team at The Christie and the University Hospital of South Manchester. Her interests are in clinical trials focusing on drug development of targeted agents and immunotherapy for patients with lung cancer and she is chief investigator and principal investigator on a portfolio of lung cancer clinical trials. She is a member or the EORTC lung group, the NCRI lung clinical studies group (CSG), the lung cancer clinical reference group (CRG) and represents the RCP at lung cancer NICE technology appraisals.

Phase II and III clinical trials with novel agents in lung cancer and mesothelioma; member of National Institute for Health Research lung CSG; member of EORTC lung group.
