Overview
We don’t always realise it but as health professionals most of us give potentially significant and distressing information several times a day. Feeling ill-prepared for this and handling the strong emotions that are often around has been identified as a major source of stress and burn out.
In this evidence-based workshop, we will cover key skills and strategies for challenging conversations to boost your confidence in helping people process and absorb the information they are given, feel supported and able to participate more fully in decisions about their treatment and care.
SPIKES Plus
The SPIKES ‘Plus’ model, developed by the Maguire Unit from the original SPIKES model by Baile and Buckman (2000), is used in medical and nurse education for delivering significant information or breaking bad news. Unlike the original, which is often seen as linear, SPIKES ‘Plus’ emphasizes flexibility, using cues throughout the consultation, and the importance of empathy. It follows the principle of ‘gather before you give’, ensuring information is acknowledged and delivered in manageable chunks, tailored to the patient's needs. This approach helps ensure that information and advice are both heard and absorbed effectively.
